Excursion to Barrio Chino (not our first)

Today, after a morning of study, we went walking around our neighbourhood, venturing south of avenida Cabildo, an area which we've neglected so far. We walked far and wide and ended up walking back north along Lacroze and ending up at the Barrio Chino (after saving a fugitive dog that was running dangerously onto a busy road) and discovered a curious baked good whose ingredients included "etc". "Manteca" makes it non vegan which is just as well. Photo submitted as proof.

Obligatory first post

So we've been here for approx. two weeks and somehow still haven't managed to write anything in this blog. Hence, welcome to our first post (!!!!) roundup of stuff, photos included.

Since arriving here at the beginning of Feb, we've been keeping pretty busy.

We've eaten lots of yummy food:

Raw pizza & crepe + yummy almond milk smoothie at Buenos Aires Verde, Palermo (Note: the facial expression displayed above was my reaction to having a photo taken, certainly not the food, which was awesome)

Sad we-forgot-to-take-a-photo photo of the best pizza (fugazza and pizzaiola) we've had so far + mutilated faina at Los Inmortales.

Some of which we have actually cooked:

Home made empanada (!) with yummy salad.

Strange looking - but tasty, I promise! - scrambled tofu with lots of spinach and broccoli (see, Mich? We're eating healthy!)

We've bought lots of groceries, including these among lots of unphotographed others:

This badly photographed collection includes rice milk, chocolate soy milk powder, dulce de leche flavoured soy thing, tofu - plain and marinated, seitan, seitan empanadas, vegetable sushi, TVP, conditioner, refried beans, soy cream cheese, black beans, chickpea flour, frozen brocoli, & chia seeds.

We've patted/naaawwwed at many animals

We've explored our neighbourhood and this beautiful city

Our Street

Plaza de Mayo

Note: We've been kind of crappy at taking photos around the city, so there wasn't much to choose from.

Some bonus random observations re: food:

Finding vegan products, as well as products that we can use to make typical veganish foods like tofu, peanut butter, loads of different kinds of veggies, beans and grains, is really easy here, thanks to barrio chino and the dieteticas dotted all over the city.

That said, there are a whole bunch of things that are lacking - like certain spices and things I'm used to at home like maple syrup or powdered vegetable stock that doesn't contain gelatin or cow fat (both of which I find strangely out of place). Or bread that manages to be wholemeal & not have honey - a rare feat in Buenos Aires apparently - and not taste like cardboard.

But generally speaking, so far it seems that being vegan in this city is going to be much easier than I thought. :)

As a total side note, I'm starting spanish lessons tomorrow. Eeek!
